2015 Women's Healthy Weight Day

2015 Women's Healthy Weight Day

The Women's Healthy Weight Day 2015 on January 22nd is a reminder to women to maintain their weight in a healthy way.
The topic of weight is an invariable topic in most meetings. If you meet a friend after a long time, the initial greetings are often followed by: "You've lost weight" or "You've put on weight". It's no wonder then that some women are obsessed with their weight.

An ideal weight is every woman's dream. It is also extremely desirable from the health point of view. But even more important is to achieve a healthy weight. Some suffer from eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, where they starve themselves to lose weight and bulimia, where they throw up excess food. On the other hand, we have women who are not at all concerned about their weight or their fitness levels. Their excessive weight puts them at a risk of several diseases like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and so on.

The Healthy Weight Day on January 22nd and The Healthy Weight Week held between January 19 and 25 are primarily held in the United States to discourage the obsession with severe weight loss in an unhealthy manner. Women are encouraged to live healthy and accept their natural weight and at the same time, avoid unhealthy diet practices using weight-loss plans that could do more harm than good.

Healthy Weight Loss Tips for Women

Most people are aware of the best methods to lose or maintain weight. But sometimes, they are either too lazy to follow them or they want quick and visible results. Here are some healthy weight loss tips that are often advised:
  • s   Be physically active throughout the day. Make time for a regular fitness regimen, even if it means a brief, quick walk every day
  • s   Eat adequate food to satisfy your requirement of calories per day, but don't overeat even if the food is tempting. Don't starve yourself either as there is a chance that you may overeat later
  • s   Make sure that the calories come from healthy foods; avoid junk whenever possible. Include salads in your meals
  • s   Reduce intake of saturated fats, simple sugars and alcohol
  • s   If you wish to diet and lose excess weight, take the professional help of a dietitian. But first confirm that the weight is excess for your height
  • s  Make sure that any weight-loss regimen that you follow is aimed at bringing a gradual rather than a sudden reduction in weight
  • s   Drink plenty of water
  • s   Avoid medications for losing weight. These are associated with several side effects

Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme in Tamil Nadu

Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme in Tamil Nadu

The state government of Tamil Nadu has introduced a new Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme for the residents of the state. A sum of Rs.150 crores has been allotted for this. This was announced in the Assembly by the Finance Minister Mr. O. Panneerselvam on Thursday 4th August 2011.

The new insurance scheme will replace the previous ''Kalaignar Insurance Scheme'' that covered 642 medical procedures and which expired on 5th July 2011.

Coverage

The new insurance scheme would give a cover of 1 lakh rupees annually for 950 medical procedures, which would be extended up to 1.5 lakh rupees for treatment of few specific diseases.

It was aimed at providing affordable and quality health services to the people. Under the new scheme, a family can avail of medical benefits up to 4 lakh rupees for 4 years while it was 1 lakh rupees for 4 years according to the previous scheme.

Priority for Government Hospitals

The new scheme also seeks to give government hospitals priority over those in the private sector. Certain types of treatments will be permitted only in government hospitals and special wards will be set up for this in hospitals approved by the Government.

Under the scheme, certain medical procedures will be allowed to be performed only at government hospitals which will help in their upgradation and special and exclusive areas will be earmarked in the government hospitals identified under the scheme.

Interim Period

The state government would identify an insurance firm for implementing the new insurance scheme. During the interim period, till the insurance firm is selected, those requiring treatment will be allowed under the existing scheme at recognized hospitals limited to the amount fixed under the scheme. The required amount incurred on treatment would be sent directly to the hospital.

World Leprosy Day 2015

World Leprosy Day 2015

World LeprosyDay (WLD) is observed on the last Sunday of January each year. This year it is Sunday 25 January.
The idea of WLD was conceived by the French Humanitarian, Raoul Follereau who played a major role in helping, supporting and fundraising for people affected with leprosy.
Follereau believed that people affected with leprosy should not be treated as sub-human and should receive the same care, dignity and quality treatment as any other disease.
He also believed that raising awareness about the facts of leprosy was necessary to create awareness and reduce the stigma associated with the disease.

This day was chosen to mark the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination on 30 January 1948. In his lifetime, Gandhi had worked extensively caring for and supporting people with leprosy. Gandhi nursed several affected people at the Sabarmati ashram. He was one of the first leaders to work for leprosy-affected people. To quote Gandhi, "leprosy work is not merely medical relief, it is transforming frustration of life into joy of dedication, personal ambition into selfless service..."

This day is being observed from the past 60 years in order to create and spread awareness of leprosy keeping with the objectives conceived by Raoul Follereau. The idea of a special day to mark leprosy is to make people aware of a disease that is thought to be extinct.

Objectives of World Leprosy Day

In 2013, 215,656 people were diagnosed with leprosy. There are millions who also go undiagnosed. According to the WHO statistics, there are 3 million people worldwide who are disabled as a result of late diagnosis and treatment. According to the Leprosy Mission Trust India (http://www.tlmindia.org/), 55% of leprosy cases are in India and there were 127, 000 new cases reported between 2010-11. Leprosy affects the poor and marginalized communities who lack access to adequate sanitation, healthcare and clean living spaces.

Given the statistics of leprosy, it is necessary to disseminate the right information about the disease and treatment available for a cure.

Objectives

1. WLD's mission is to inform and educate the public and affected people on the facts of leprosy to reduce the stigma and facilitate inclusion of affected people in society.

2. The idea of WLD is also to enable the voices of a forgotten group of people.

3. WLD also involves government programmes across health centers to facilitate free check-ups and provide regular and free treatment to affected people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) partners with governments across the world for a range of leprosy eradication programmes. The National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) is supported by the WHO in its various programmes to create awareness, provide treatment and rehabilitation and address issues of social and economic stigma.
